Our History
Our Roots,
Our Journey,
Our History
The story of Mishkeegogamang is one of determination and adaptation in the face of profound change. For centuries, the Ojibway people thrived across the vast boreal forests and waterways of their ancestral lands, relying on hunting, fishing, and gathering to sustain their communities. The signing of Treaty Number Nine in 1905-1906, followed by the adhesion in 1929-1930, marked a turning point in their history. While the treaty promised mutual benefits, its implementation often disrupted traditional ways of life, altering land use and governance. The arrival of settlers and the establishment of resource-based industries further impacted the community, leading to significant challenges, including the erosion of traditional knowledge and self-sufficiency.
Despite these hardships, the Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation has remained determined to protect and revitalize its cultural heritage. Elders play a pivotal role in passing down stories, teachings, and language, ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots. By embracing their history and traditions, the people of Mishkeegogamang continue to assert their identity and chart a path forward grounded in strength and unity.
